Rupununi Rodeo

April 20, 2019 - April 21, 2019

Once a year, there is a time when Lethem comes alive as people descend in swarms, cowboy hats and plaid shirts are donned everywhere. These are the signs that it’s time for the Rupununi Rodeo. Held every Easter weekend, it is the centre stage of the Rupununi cowboys and cowgirls. It is a much anticipated event for the vacqueros and ranches as they compete to prove their supremacy. For the crowds, it is the thrill of witnessing this adrenaline pumping competition with amazement and anticipation.

The origins of Rodeo dates back to the 1960s at Pirara during the dry season when all ranchers got together to round up their cattle. Rounding up is the process whereby all cattle are brought to the corral for headcount, branding and general inspection. The small competition among ranchers grew over time to become the biggest attraction in the region. It is now held at its permanent home, the RRR ground.

The Rodeo is organised by The Rodeo Committee which is an organ of the Rupununi Livestock Producer’s Association (RLPA), and depends on the support and contribution of local ranches, Guyanese companies, and individual sponsors alike. Participants are mainly local cowboys, with very few professional rodeo riders. Popular events include bareback bronco, saddle bronco, steer roping, and wild cow milking.

Rodeo is more than just an entertaining event; it is a connection to the Rupununi as a region, its history and its people. Your visit is sure to be unforgettable and we look forward to seeing you as we showcase our beautiful region to you.
